Imagine a band formed from the harmonious convergence of different planetary cultures. sumYOUman is precisely that—a collective of terrestrial musicians who put a lot extra into what they bring to the punk scene. Each member brings unique sounds and styles from where they call home, which might as well be another planet given the differences in culture and conditioning that they have endured to emerge as musicians. They create an eclectic mix that is as diverse as their origins. Their music is a symphony of punk vibes, influenced by pop and American folk music. The effect is sometimes funny, sometimes serious and serene and sometimes a bit strange for sure. Alien hybrids are many things, the most important being ‘real.’
Nathan is a charismatic lead singer. His voice, a once familiar and engaging, but tantilizingly ethereal, and then guttural and edgey, a range that feels as exotic as the words he’s expresses. Accompanying him are Liam, with a bass riff that screams non-conformity, along with the driving, quick paced rythym from a drummer, Jake, who is as rough and complex as his clean-cut, boyish manners aren’t. Together, they are three very individual styles, that aren’t always harmonious, but as they find their grooves, the whole of it makes the occassional awkward flat feel very intentional, authentic and wonderfully unpolished.
Their ability to convey universal emotions—love, hope, wonder, joy, frustration, loniness and pride—demonstrates that music truly is a universal language. Fans from every corner of the Earth, from New York City to Tokyo, have embraced their sound, proving that when it comes to great music, the sky is no longer the limit.
